![]() ![]() Why, then, would anyone voluntarily watch a movie about something that’s not just terrifying, but terrifyingly real? For one thing, the best movies about serial killers aren’t about delivering transgressive shocks – at least, that’s not their only function. And they don’t go away when the screen shuts off. It’s just a fellow person who, through either nature or nurture, has had their moral compass completely, irreparably shattered. ![]() That’s because the idea of somebody who murders simply for the thrill of taking a life isn’t a cinematic invention – it’s not a giant lizard symbolising Cold War anxiety, or a demonic force feeding off our deepest insecurities. None, however, is more frightening than the serial killer. The movies are full of monsters, representing the entire range of human fears and weaknesses.
